We are having a busy summer, there is so much going on! But one of the things that has kept us really busy is our new retailer in Spain. Check out the picture to see the goods that are on the way to them. THAT is a lot when you have to make it by yourself. Every single piece is hand made!

109 is a very small company (hey, check me out beading by myself watching MTV and drinking tea) so every thing 109 does is personal. Everything!

So I personally had a very cool day when word came to me that Josh T. Pearson liked a specific bracelet from the collection and I sent one off to him as fast as I could. And before I could blink then I sat with a vinyl of his album "Last of the Country Gentlemen" in my lab. And the cover is almost as stunning as the music. It is going up on the 109 'wall of fame' so it can be admired while listened to while beading. So welcome in my workshop Josh! It is a pleasure.

Peter Andre went to Ibiza for a gig at Eden and along with him came his latest 109 necklace and a bit of our stuff on his wrist. And it is unfortunate that we can't add a link for you to our web shop so you can see the necklace up and close, but he is way ahead of us and the piece he is flashing is only the second one we made. And the fist one is already sold... We love this piece though and we WILL make some more and take some nice pictures of it and show it to you in the web shop. BUT you can only buy it in POISON ANGEL as it is an exclusive for them, because they have have wrapped me around their little finger with flatter and charm.... they do it over and over again..... I think I might be addicted to them (go and see them for yourself and you will know what I am talking about)

The brand New Heavies @ Ronnie Scott's

The Brand New Heavies at Ronnie Scott's was just one of those things that couldn't be missed. And we had a hot sweaty night with a room full of party animals (us included). It was a beautiful combination of the company of good friends, a really nice meal, a legendary venue and one of the coolest bands on the planet covered in 109 bling. There was a lot of love in that room, so much actually that security look nervous.

Simon and Andrew were swinging their crystal covered prayer necklaces made for the occasion and Rita Hot Stuff was strutting her bracelets on the tambourine while she was singing her heart out in sweet harmony with the ultimate BNH queen NDea.

I want to do it all over again! NOW!

Double Wrap Is The New Black

At 109 HQ we have completely fallen in-love with our new double wrap bracelets! The first prototypes feels so smooth and soft even though they are made of tough string and hard stones.

We will keep experimenting with the beads and want to try some rough looking turquoise and also look for some large chunks of sterling silver.

We do think though that we have found the perfect string; greasy waxed cotton string! It is both soft and strong.

We are very happy to introduce our new "Limited by 109" range to you.
When we look for new parts for our ranges then we also see a lot of pieces that we can only get in very limited amounts. And therefore we haven't been able to use these parts as our main focus has been to create ranges that can be made for our stock. And it was a shame. So much that we have decided to simply let loose and create as many pieces as the stock we can get hold of allows. Having said that, then most of the pieces in "Limited by 109" are one-offs.

This week the x-factor contestants visited Headley Court to visit some of the injured servicemen after recording the annual x-factor charity single to benefit "Help For Heros".

Paije made himself comfortable in the sofa chatting to a serviceman in a wheel chair, as always in his own style. And this this time he flashed his 109 necklace '3 Wise Monkies'. We love the way he wore it.

The '3 Wise Monkies' necklace is a very simple design dominated by the beautiful tigereye stones. The mala is finished with 3 bone monkey figures of the 3 wise monkeys representing the principels of 'hear no evil', 'see no evil', 'speak no evil'.

109 Jewellery supports The Albert Kennedy Trust (AKT) for the 2nd year by sponsoring a present for the charity's annual x-mas fundraising auction.

AKT's mission is to ensure that all lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans young people are able to live in accepting, supportive and caring homes, by providing a range of services to meet the individual needs of those who would otherwise be homeless or living in a hostile environment. And they aim to do this by:

-Providing appropriate homes through supported lodgings, fostering and other specialist housing schemes.

-Enabling young people to manage independent living successfully.

-Improving attitudes within society towards lesbian, gay and bisexual young people.

109's Present
This year we have a really amazing present we think! We decided to give AKT a package of the 4 pieces of jewellery that Peter Andre is wearing on the cover of his new album. And we then made a quick phone call to Can Associates that manage Peter and they agreed immediately to donate a signed CD to go in the same lot as the jewellery. We couldn't be happier!

Spurred on by the amazing feed back from Can Associates we then got in touch with Dannii Minogue's management and they also immediately offered to send some signed goods from Dannii for the auction. Gold dust!

If you read my blog from last week about Peter Andre where I laughed off the rumours about a little thing going on between me and him, then you will probably find this picture amusing! Hrm!
Take a look at the artwork of Peter Andre's new album 'Accelerate' and tell me what you think of the 109 pieces he chose to wrap around his wrist?

We absolutely love this picture for so many reasons: We think the combination of the colours and materials chosen is amazing. The smooth white bone necklaces that are wrapped around his wrist looks stunning together with the most natural coloured Ojuzu beads. It is super nice to see 109 so soft, calm and natural.
And of course we are simply thrilled to find ourselves on a cd-cover! I am very pleased that we had our pieces on this shoot!
However, I am still a bit disappointed not to be the 'hot jewellery girl' that makes him blush and giggle on TV....

Am I Peter Andre's Mysterious Girl?

-eeeeeh, no! But I received loads of messages from friends last night asking me about my relationship with Peter Andre. I got pretty excited when someone asked: Is that YOU Peter Andre is talking about on his ITV2 show?

So, I watched the show this morning and saw the scene where Peter talks about his jewellery and this girl that made it for him, and that he got her phone number... But it wasn’t my bling and it wasn’t my phone number he was talking about. I did however enjoy the moment.

We did send some pieces to Peter Andre a while ago after his management asked us if we would do so. But we haven’t got any good snaps of any of our pieces on him. The best that we can do is this poster from his new perfume 'Mysterious Girl'. We think this very well could be our necklace that has been heavily photo shopped. Its the same beads as the ones we use on 'Tiny Skull', and we know that he has got that one and that he had it for the day of this shoot. But judge for yourself! And we will of course keep looking out for pictures of Peter that is worth talking about...

Mixed Up!

Some of our Mala necklaces are actually also some pretty cool bracelets. We like '109 Original Mala' as on the picture here. Its a great length and can be wrapped around 3 times on most sized wrists: It is a bit looser on a girls wrists than on a mans, but the size seems to fit all. We like mixing it with other elasticated bracelets that can hold it all in place. And the tassel adds something interesting when the bracelets are stacked as many of our customers like to do it.

We are going to sell some of the 109 Original Mala's in our sample sale in November. Our supplier has stopped stocking the sterling silver rings we use in this design and we will have to change it for something else, and want to sell off the pieces already made. The sample sale is strictly by invitation only and will be on our premises in London but some pieces will also be available online (including this necklace). Damn! I can't believe it!

We have seen the x-factor's Aiden Grimshaw flashing his Ojuzu beads on so many occasions now, but all the shots we have of it are so bad I fear we could get arrested for it. It's embarresing how desperate we have grown after realizing he prefers long sleeved clothes on most days when the paparazzi are around, and we are now fidning ourselves taking pictures of our TV and computer screens in the hope of getting just one good picture of the brilliant Aiden AND his stacked bracelets. It's not working for us, and we even managed to make Aiden look silly...

Our Japanese manufacturer of ‘Ojuzu Japan’ is also supplying temples in Kyoto. Ojuzu is the Japanese name for the Buddhist bracelet that is held during prayer. The bracelets are traditionally used as presents to celebrate birth, marriage and ‘coming of age’. They are also given as keepsakes and a source for protection of loved ones. Asakusa Ojuzu

It left an everlasting impression when I went to Japan for the first time in 2000. It is the strangest place I have ever been and it only became more mystical for each time I went there after.
The first time I went there I got encourged to go and visit the huge temple in Asakusa, and it was amazing. So amazing in fact that I have been there on all my trips to Japan following.
The temple it self is exciting. The grounds holds a Buddist temple as well as a Shinto temple. And the temples are surrounded by a big bazar full of very Japanesesy looking goods and a beautiful garden with koi carps.
It is my favorite place to buy presents for my friends and family. And it is also here I got introduced to Ojuzu bracelets for the first time. I will never forget the thrill I felt when I saw the hidden drawing inside a bead for the first time, as the Ojuzu Japan bracelets we are getting ready to launch in 109. And it is the coolest present on the planet to give to friends as I got to see their thrill as well.
I found this picture of the temple and want to share it with you. And if you ever go to Tokyo then make sure you go to Asakusa for some pure Japan magic..

Our Name

The name ‘109 Jewellery’ is a direct inspiration taken from Elizabeth Gilbert’s bestselling novel ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ that has also been made into a movie starring Julia Roberts. (Released August 2010)

The book is Elizabeth Gilbert’s personal account of the year she took out of her life to recover from a grim divorce. Depressed and confused she started her journey by going to Rome to fulfil her lifelong dream of learning Italian and here she also indulged in the glorious local delicacies. From Italy she went to India to live in an Ashram. She spent her time there serving the Ashram, praying and rethinking her values with help from the teachers and other devotees staying there. And for the final leg of her 1 year journey she went to Bali, looking for a medicine man that read her future years before and she also meets her soul mate and future husband Felipe.

It is an amazing journey, an inspiring story and it is the foreword of this book that inspired our name.

In the foreword Elizabeth Gilbert explains that ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ has 108 chapters, because the prayer necklace she used in the Ashram has 108 beads to keep count on prayers. She goes on to explain that the foreword of her book then must be the 109th chapter, symbolizing ‘the guru bead’ or the 109th bead on the same necklace. The guru bead is slightly different from the other beads and it is a gentle reminder that one repetition of prayers has come to an end and so also that a new reption of sometimes 1000’s of prayers can begin. But the guru bead is also there as a reminder of the significant connection between guru and scholar, and it invites to take a break and disappear in the stillness between prayers.

For us ‘109’ signifies this break, the option to enjoy the stillness even in a crazy, busy and creative life. Traditionally jewellery is used so often to remind us of special people and special events, and we like to think that our jewellery can provide a reminder for the wearer to take a break and enjoy the stillness, even for just 1 minute.

We were browsing A LOT for images before we found our special one for our long awaited Ojuzu Japan collection (see posts below)! And a couple of them are so sweet that it would a shame not to share them. I dont know about you, but I could just stare at Buddha images all day long! 109 hearts Buddha.

The range ‘Ojuzu Japan’ is made in collaboration with a Japanese manufacterer and is for now consisting of bracelets. 109 Jewellery first discovered this design in a Tokyo Shinto temple.
Inside the main bead of the bracelets you will find a hidden Buddha, only visible when holding the main bead towards the light looking through a tiny peep hole.
The bracelet comes in 4 different wood colours. It is a highly contagious product and it is on the market for RRP £39.

It is so easy to get caught up in the cash-flow situation in our daily lives of running the business. And I cherish those moments where we get to combine our personal beliefs and desires with the business. Like the day we started researching images for our coming range of Ojuzu Japan bracelets.

Inside the Ojuzu Japan bracelet you will find a hidden Buddha, only visible when holding the main bead towards the light looking through a tiny peep hole. We wanted something beautiful, serene and original. The idea was to produce the image in-house and we were simply browsing for inspiration when we stumbled across hoodacious.co.uk and Stef's beautiful Buddha stencil paintings. We immediately felt a strong connection with the image and got in touch with Stef. We explained the project and asked him if he could see a way where we could use his image for the Ojuzu Japan bracelets.

He was very fast to reply and liked the idea so much that he let us use his image inside the Ojuzu Japan bracelets. It was the missing link, the last piece in the puzzle to create our long awaited range of Ojuzu Japan we have been working on for so long now!

Ojuzu Japan

We have been planning a new range of bracelets with a very special design feature for some time. It is something so unique and special that we had to call in help to even find out how to actually do this.
It is a rather normal looking Buddhist prayer bracelet; wooden beads strung on an elastic band, finished with a guru bead. The surprising difference between a normal bracket and this one is to be found inside the guru bead. When looking at it you will notice a small hole and you instantly want to look through it. So while you are holding it towards the light, looking through the hole a beautiful meditating Buddha will be revealed. It is a very calm and almost soothing image. It is an original artwork made by the artist Stef.

We found a factory in Japan that can get Stef's image inside a guru bead, and we are very grateful for that. All we need now is some packaging that is a gesture towards the bracelets and Stef's generosity in allowing us to use his image.

The bracelets will be out in the shops in 3 months time.

We started dreaming up different packaging ideas as soon as we decided to design our own ranges of jewellery. We didnt want a box, we didnt want something tacky and cheap looking or something you see already in every shop. We wanted something to keep, something usefull, something NICE!
And now we are very pleased to introduce you to our new packaging. It is a strong little cotton bag with a simple tie string. The cotton is organic and we are proud that it is made in England. It is so us! We are feeling very proud of it! What do you think?

We are thrilled to have moved into our new offices in Fulham. It is in a brand new house and deliciously crisp! We have assambeld the new furniture, unpacked all our beads (and have space for them now) and hung our framed precious tokens from celeb clients. It is starting to feel like home. Next on the list is to find some outdoor furniture for the roof terrace and consider when to have a party....

Here is another fun one! Hilary Alexander. I went to see the hat show 'Headonism' at LFW in 2009, and I was late! With a beating heart and a slight sweat on my forehead I changed shoes in the courtyard of Somerset House. And as I was doing that I saw Hilary taking a breather (she was smoking) by herself waiting for 'Headonism' to start. Still high on the adrenalin from being so late I rushed over and gave her a bracelet which she promptly put on. I was very pleased with my self and reliefed ofcourse that she put it on.

But it was gold dust when I saw her having her picture taken with Joan Collins and ofcourse when I spotted her wearing the bracelet on her video rapport for the Daily Telegraph....

Dave Gahan/ Depeche Mode

Really soon after we started out in the UK, then we got this fantastic opotunity to send some bracelets for the boys of Depeche Mode. And ofcourse we then did! I, myself has been a Depeche Mode fan for many years, and this was just about as cool as it gets:

The first stuff we sent them, they were wearing for shoots for Rolling Stone Magazine, Dazed & Confused and Clash! mag. Then they went on to the world premiere of their new single 'Wrong' in Germany with Dave Gahan wearing his bracelet from me on stage. I couldnt belive my eyes..

Then they came to London to do Jools Holland and I hooked up with their PR and got some more stuff sent off to them. And very last minute, before they were heading home I got a braclet for Dave's wife down to their hotel after he requested it.

But it REALLY freaked me out when I then recieved a phonecall and it was the sexy Rock God Dave Gahan in the other end saying 'thank you so much for the bracelets and I hope we get to meet up one day'. You dont get that every day do you?

And we did get to hang out for a bit later on but at 109 we never kiss and tell.....

Working in bling teaches you a lot about stuff you didnt know before... well i guess this is the way life should be always. But I never thought that I would get to know so much about football and footballers as I know by now! Footballers like bling, and we are doing our best to fulfill this need, succesfully I would say. But sometimes I'm so out my depth in this field. As on the day I saw this man wearing our bling in OK! Magazine and I had no idea who he was or why he was on the party pages...

I showed my husband the picture when he got home and he got really excited and asked me "HE wears you stuff?" about 3 times. So it is one of the most gifted footballers right now, Emmanuel Adebayor. And he plays for Machester United now and scores a lot of goals.

So I learned something new again on that day:-)

Dannii Monogue is the nicest person in showbiz

British x-factor/ Dannii Minogue

When i got the first samples over from the first collection we worked with, then I got this amazing opportunity to send some stuff to the at that time, not so popular Dannii Minogue.
My darling friend who is also a hair dresser did Dannii's hair and told me how wonderful she was. He asked her for an address to send some stuff to and he was kind enough to let me in on the secret.
So I got some stuff together for Dannii and decided to bring the whole lot and have her pick what ever she liked! So I got an Addison Lee and asked him to wait. I went into the mail-room and had the guys there call the address to see if they wanted to see the whole collection to pick and choose from.

Hmmm.....

A NOT so friendly personal assistant came down and asked me 3 times "I still don't understand where you got this address from". I tried explaining it to her, but she was very very unhappy with me being there. She snapped the presents for Dannii, she had no desire to see anything else and left me with a huff and a puff.

I F-E-L-T S-O-O-O-O-O-O B-A-D! I was so embarrassed and thought i had screwed things up for my friend also! I should just have left the present for her in the mail room and not pushed it I thought. I felt sick in my stomach....

The relief was HUUUUGE when I got an email later the same day from the grumpy assistant telling me she was sorry for being so 'frosty' and that Dannii loved the beads. What a relief! Phew! That was a bit too much excitement for me in one day!

I wrote back and offered to send some beads to Dannii's acts as well and she kindly accepted. I wrote some personal letters to all of her acts and sent it off all nicely wrapped.

The following Saturday was also my friend's (the hairdresser) birthday and I went there to celebrate. We all wanted to watch the x-factor and I was so H-A-P-P-Y when I saw one of the guys wearing the beads on screen, singing his heart out!

That was the beginning of a beautiful relationship with the x-factor and Dannii Minogue! More to come...
